Natural Ammonite Gem-Layer Ammonite Fossil

$1,499.00

An extraordinary completely natural Ammolite-bearing Ammonite fossil from Southern Alberta, Canada, displaying a spectacular natural gem layer with vivid flashes of green, gold, yellow, blue, and fiery orange. Ammolite of this quality and geological origin is uniquely associated with the ammonite-bearing formations of Southern Alberta, making these fossils highly distinctive collector specimens.

The fossil remains in its natural form and has been professionally protected with a clear acrylic coating to help preserve the delicate fossil surface while enhancing the visibility and brilliance of its natural iridescent colors. This coating does not create the color—the remarkable spectrum is naturally present within the Ammolite gem layer.

Dating back approximately 70–75 million years to the Late Cretaceous Period, this remarkable fossil began as the shell of an ancient marine ammonite living in the inland sea that once covered this region. After the ammonite died, its shell settled onto the seafloor and was buried beneath layers of sediment. Over millions of years, the surrounding sediments hardened and the shell was preserved and mineralized. Southern Alberta’s unique geological conditions allowed portions of the original aragonite shell to develop and retain the spectacular natural iridescence now known as Ammolite.

A truly impressive collector’s cabinet fossil, combining millions of years of natural history, rarity, and exceptional color in one remarkable specimen.
